Sport

There is a lot to admire and enjoy about sporting endeavor: striving to achieve greatness, enjoyment of expertise and prowess, determination, discipline and even triumph over adversity. There are many sporting stories about how a sportsman overcame injury, illness or personal adversity to claim a much coveted prize and I personally enjoy sport for all of these reasons.  There is a unique delight derived from participating in sport as well as in the sportsman’s own enjoyment of his sport.

Recently, a young pretender to the women’s tennis throne (such as it is) told the London Evening Standard, ‘Recently, I turned over that new leaf, just enjoying things, relaxed and playing tennis, because it’s what I love to do.’  Heather Watson is the first woman to win a French Open tennis match in 17 years! No wonder she was enjoying it!

Aside from all these reasons though, the main reason I enjoy sport so much is because sport is such good ground for mini life lessons: pride comes before a fall (underestimating your opponent and then loosing, e.g.Arsenal loosing in the Carling cup); Live to fight another day (losing to a better opponent); Preparation is key (winning after a gruelling practice schedule); It’s not about the winning, it’s about the taking part (winning when you know you were not the best); If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again (winning after a long line of losses), I could go on and on…

However, I won’t just now, that’s what my blog is for…
